Kegemaran akan budaya pop Korea dimulai di Republik Rakyat Cina dan Asia Tenggara mulai akhir 1990-an.Istilah Hanliu (韓流, Bahasa Korea;Hallyu) diadopsi oleh media Cina setelah album musik pop Korea, HOT, dirilis di Cina. Serial drama TV Korea mulai diputar di Cina dan menyebar ke negara-negara lain seperti Hongkong, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Filipina, Jepang, Amerika Serikat, Amerika Latin dan Timur Tengah.
